Gut-Skin Axis
Your face is the window to your whole internal system and your gastrointestinal system (gut) health is a direct reflection to your skin health - Colour, texture and condition of your skin not only tells you that your skin may have nutritional deficiencies, it could also show signs of stress and can provide insight into your current or potential health conditions. In our consultations, the main reason I ask about this is because our gut and skin are more interconnected than you might think, often referred to as the "gut-skin axis."
1️⃣ Microbiome: Your gastrointestinal system is home to trillions of tiny microbes, and a balanced gut microbiome can help reduce inflammation, keeping your skin calm and clear.
2️⃣ Nutrient Absorption: Your gut is responsible for absorbing all those essential vitamins and minerals from the food you eat. Nutrient deficiencies can show up on your skin as dryness, acne, or even rashes.
3️⃣ Food Sensitivities: Please pay attention to how your skin reacts to different foods—it might hold clues to what's going on inside your gut. Certain foods can trigger skin issues if you have sensitivities or allergies.
4️⃣ Stress Connection: High stress levels can effect your body, it leads to high cortisol levels - your cortisol hormone is made fully within your adrenal glands and cortisol is released into your bloodstream when stressed. This causes imbalances and skin problems, like breakouts and flare-ups.
So, what can you do to promote a happy gut-skin relationship?
🍏 Eat a balanced diet rich in fibre, fruits, and veggies to support your gut microbiome
💦 Stay hydrated to help your body flush out toxins
💊 Take pre and probiotics for gut health
🧘♀️ Manage stress through mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation
🚫 Be mindful of potential food triggers if you suspect sensitivities
