Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis Pilaris (KP) - some call chicken skin or strawberry skin; is a very common skin condition (generally harmless) that occurs on your upper arms, thighs or buttocks and affects around 50-80% of adults. It commonly looks like little red or white bumps.
A little background about KP
In a normal skin, your skin cells are brought to the surface and regenerated every 28-35 days.
This process is called ‘keratinization’
Keratosis pilaris forms when this process is irregular and this leads to keratin plug formation in your hair follicles.
Keratin is a protein that is naturally found in your epidermis, the very top layer of your skin!
This keratin plug formation is surrounded by lots of inflammation and essential we have the formation of keratosis pilaris.
So how do we treat Keratosis Pilaris?
Use active exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid or mandelic acid on the skin - home use and in clinic treatments
Retinol can also help regulate keratinization.
Ensure your moisturiser isn’t too thick as this can block the plugs even more
Use a moisturiser containing Urea as this ingredient is a keratolytic agent - it can help reduce dead skin buildup on your skin's surface.
