Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis Pilaris (KP) - some call chicken skin or strawberry skin; is a very common skin condition (generally harmless) that occurs on your upper arms, thighs or buttocks and affects around 50-80% of adults. It commonly looks like little red or white bumps.

A little background about KP

  • In a normal skin, your skin cells are brought to the surface and regenerated every 28-35 days.

  • This process is called ‘keratinization’

  • Keratosis pilaris forms when this process is irregular and this leads to keratin plug formation in your hair follicles.

  • Keratin is a protein that is naturally found in your epidermis, the very top layer of your skin!

  • This keratin plug formation is surrounded by lots of inflammation and essential we have the formation of keratosis pilaris.

So how do we treat Keratosis Pilaris?

  • Use active exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid or mandelic acid on the skin - home use and in clinic treatments

  • Retinol can also help regulate keratinization.

  • Ensure your moisturiser isn’t too thick as this can block the plugs even more

  • Use a moisturiser containing Urea as this ingredient is a keratolytic agent -  it can help reduce dead skin buildup on your skin's surface.
